Når man jobber med kartlegging av insekter, kan man med litt erfaring, nøye planlegging, nok tålmodighet og en god porsjon flaks gjøre store oppdagelser og finne selv de sjeldneste arter man kan tenke seg. Man kan drømme om en vakker og supersjelden bille, eller å finne igjen en sommerfugl som ikke er sett på lang tid. Men, noe av det jeg liker best med entomologien er det uforutsigbare. Og det var akkurat dette helt utrolige, som man aldri kunne forutsi eller planlegge, som skjedde meg en gang i sommer. Men først skal vi en tur til Saltdalen og Junkerdalen i Nordland, det er den første finværshelga og feltsesongen 2020 sparkes i gang.
Sesongen 2020 startet kald og vinterlig. Den store planen for sesongen var å sette opp insektfeller i Junkerdalen, men mai forløp med vintertemperaturer og snødekt mark til etter nasjonaldagen, og Nordlandsturen måtte vente til første helga i juni. Det var selvfølgelig ikke bare insektfeller som var målet, men også å finne Norges største snutebille, Lepyrus quadrinotatus, og den uhyre sjeldne glansvierbladbilla Gonioctena flavicornis. Selv om begge artene er svært lokalt forekommende, var de funnet i området tidligere, så med den god porsjon tålmodighet var jeg ganske sikker på at jeg skulle klare å finne disse to godbitene. Begge artene er dessuten knyttet til selje og vier (Salix), slik at jeg kunne fokusere utelukkende mot dette habitatet.
Feltarbeid
Det å skulle sette opp insektfeller er mye snakk om å finne de beste plassene. Man må først og fremst tenke på optimalisering av habitater, er det nok død ved, er det åpent nok med svermegater til insektene, er eksponeringen riktig, vil plassen gro igjen utover sommeren osv. Sammen med kollega Oddvar Hanssen fra NINA, ble det derfor mye rekognosering i forkant og vi ble fort godt kjent i både Saltdalen og Junkerdalen i løpet av den første dagen. Vi stoppet på alle plasser med gode seljebestand som sto i sola. Spesielt skadete seljetrær får fort angrep av insekter, og i Junkerdalsrura, der det går jevnt med stein- og jordras i vårløsninga, var det store mengder av det riktige habitatet.
Det ble samlet inn store mengder insekter fra selje, og vi følte etter hvert at vi begynte å få god kontroll på den lokale billefaunaen. Men, de to artene vi så etter glimret med sitt fravær. Jeg synes dette var veldig rart, tatt i betraktning den enorme innsatsen vi la ned med banking av seljekvister i tre dager til ende med vannblemmer i fingrene og melkesyre i skuldrene. Men vi slo oss til ro med at det kunne jo ha med den seine starten på sesongen, og at jeg tross alt skulle oppover igjen tre ganger til i løpet av sesongen for å tømme å ta inn fellene. Og vi hadde jo funnet mye annet som KUNNE være spennende …..

Snutebiller i lupa
Vel hjemme etter en flott tur med sterke naturopplevelser og vellykket felleoppsett, hastet det selvsagt å ta en rask kikk i lupa for å «scanne» gjennom materialet jeg har samlet inn. En flott art, som både var ny for meg og ny for Saltdalen, var den lille snutebille Archarius crux som utvikler seg i galler dannet av planteveps på selje og vier, og som er lett kjennelig på sitt karakteristiske hvite kors på ryggen. Dette var et fint plaster på såret for at vi ikke fant de to artene vi så etter. Billematerialet var ellers dominert av representanter for snutebilleslekta Dorytomus. Disse utvikler seg i raklene på selje og er aktive tidlig på våren for å finne seg gåsunger å legge egg i. Timingen var derfor perfekt for kartlegging av disse interessante snutebillene, men det viste seg å være få arter, dominert av den aller vanligste arten Dorytomus taeniatus, som finnes overalt i Norge der det vokser selje.
Slekta Dorytomus har imidlertid mange arter og noen av dem kan være litt vriene å artsbestemme, selv under lupe. Jeg tok derfor en ekstra nøye kikk på disse og la merke til et par eksemplarer som virket litt større enn de andre, men med den bestemmelseslitteraturen jeg hadde tilgjengelige, gikk alle til samme art: selvfølgelig Dorytomus taeniatus, igjen. Men, jeg syntes dette var litt rart og slo meg ikke til ro med det. Inngående studium av de to avvikende eksemplarene avslørte flere små forskjeller mellom disse og alle taeniatus som jeg hadde tilgjengelige i referansesamlingen. Jeg begynte derfor systematisk å ta for meg art for art, blant de 65 artene som er påvist i den palearktiske region, for å se om det var noen som kunne stemme med mine eksemplarer. Et skikkelig detektivarbeid med saumfaring i kataloger og gammel litteratur og filtrering av de 262 000 google-treffene på Dorytomus.
Oppdagelsen
Sjelden har jeg vært sikrere, kun etter bare å ha lest artikkelen. Selv med middelmådige 80-tallsfoto, knapt med figurer og en forekomst som var helt usannsynlig, ja, så måtte det være den! Alt stemte, den grove punkturen på framkroppen, den glatte snuten, de jevnt bekledde skjellene på dekkvingene, de kraftige beina og fargen. Det var ingen tvil, jeg hadde funnet Dorytomus carpathicus, nybeskrevet for vitenskapen fra Karpatene i Polen i 1984. «Også i Nordland, da…..» Man kunne jo tenke seg at slike arter kan spre seg med varmere klima og bli funnet i Sør-Skandinavia etter hvert som de inntar nye landområder mot nord, men dette var et slikt funn som var umulig å forutse. Et funn som slår ned som lyn fra klar himmel, gjør deg lamslått av fascinasjon for livets underligheter og gir en umiddelbar følelse av at dette … er «årets insektfunn».
To eksemplarer av Dorytomus carpathicus blant flere hundre Dorytomus taeniatus var avslørt. Dette måtte publiseres. Det var bare en hake, de to var hunner, og man skulle gjerne hatt begge kjønn representert for å gjøre en god beskrivelse. Hunnene hadde riktignok unike kjønnskarakter på spermateket (en indre struktur som ofte er avgjørende for artsbestemmelse), som aldri tidligere er avbildet eller beskrevet, men bilder av hannen og dens særtrekk ville gjøre beskrivelsen perfekt, som et viktig supplement til originalbeskrivelsen.

Griseflaks
Jeg husker jeg la merke til disse to eksemplarene i felten, som var litt større enn alle de andre. Med litt tankevirksomhet klarte jeg derfor å rekonstruere nøyaktig hvilke steder jeg hadde funnet de to dyrene. Den ene langt inn i Junkedalen og den andre et sted som het Litlalmenningen i Saltdal. Det hadde ingen hensikt å se etter hanner på de to neste turene den sommeren siden alle Dorytomus’ene er larver eller pupper i jorda etter at raklene har flat av seljetrærne. Den nye generasjonen snutebiller klekker først uti august eller september og overvintrer som voksne biller på bakken før de kryper opp i seljetrærne tidlig neste vår.
Mitt siste lille halmstrå var derfor å gjøre søk på høsten, da jeg skulle ta inn fellene, på de to stedene der jeg hadde funnet arten. Det var i starten på oktober og det var uvanlig varmt for årstiden. Faktisk så varmt at en del insekter hadde begynt å krype opp i trærne. Og til min store forundring klarte jeg å banke ned 4-5 eksemplarer av Doryromus fra seljekvister på den rette plassen i Saltdalen. Jeg hadde selvfølgelig ikke særlig tro på at det var annet enn Dorytomus taeniatus, men denne følelsen ble raskt erstattet av det å trekke vinnerloddet, da jeg innså at denne gangen hadde jeg hatt skikkelig griseflaks. Epilog
Det hører med til historien at sommeren 2020 i Junkerdalen ble vellykket på alle måter. Da jeg tømte fellene i juli, dukket det opp flere eksemplarer av Norges største snutebille, Lepyrus quadrinotatus i Junkerdalsura. Det første møtet ble temmelig spesielt. Jeg spottet dyret der det satt og hvilte seg på en seljekvist, og vi så inn i øynene på hverandre. Et stort ØYEblikk. Etter dette var jeg tilfreds med utbyttet og hadde egentlig gitt opp å finne glansvierbladbilla Gonioctena flavicornis. Det var dessuten trolig for seint i sesongen. Den tredje turen, i august, var derfor mer en rutinetur med tømming av feller. Det ble ikke søkt så mye etter biller siden sesongen var over for de fleste artene. Men den siste dagen la jeg merke til at det var uvanlig mye bladbillegnag på småselje i veikanten, i et område med mye solinnstråling pga. at skogen var felt på motsatt side av veien. Jeg banket derfor dette krattet og fant flere eksemplarer av de vanlige bladbillene. Og som en gave fra oven lyste den mot meg. Det første og eneste eksemplaret av glansvierbladbilla Gonioctena flavicornis jeg noensinne har sett.
