Dette er historien om viktigheten av museumsmateriale og hvordan nærhet i sted og fjernhet i tid kan nøste trådene sammen og løse taksonomiske mysterier. Denne gangen handler det om ei stor og vakker flue i fjellet.
I forbindelse med et prosjekt for kartlegging av insekter i sandområder i fjellet i Sør-Norge i 2010, satte jeg ut gule fat-feller i et lite sandtak nær Hjerkinn på Dovre. Blant et fåtall insekter som lot seg lure til å tro at dette fatet var en stor gul blomst, bet jeg meg raskt merke i ei svær våpenflue med nydelige gule og svarte tegninger. Slike fluer skal jo ikke finnes i fjellet, var den første tanken som slo meg. Våpenfluer er en oversiktlig familie av fluer med ca. 40 arter i Norge hvorav de fleste er knyttet til sumpområder i lavlandet. Flua tilhørte utvilsomt slekten Stratiomys, som inneholder flere store flotte arter, og videre artsbestemmelse indikerte at dette var arten Stratiomys singularior.
Men her var det noe muffens, verken funnstedet eller artens utseende stemte helt med denne arten. Problemet var at jeg ut fra litteraturen ikke kunne finne noen alternativ forklaring på hvilken art den mystiske flua var.
Vi går litt tilbake i tid: Året er 1861 og zoologen Johan Heinrich Siebke har lagt ut på en ekspedisjon til Dovrefjell for å kartlegge insektfaunaen i fjellområdene i Sør-Norge. En av de store oppdagelsen fra denne turen var ei våpenflue ny for vitenskapen. Og i sin reiseberetning fra 1863, beskriver han den nye arten Stratiomys paludosa. Dessverre er typematerialet av denne arten tapt, og dagens flueeksperter har derfor antatt at Siebke sitt funn kun dreier seg om en atypisk form av Stratiomys singularior, altså den samme lavlandsarten som jeg bestemte mitt dyr til.
Jeg måtte vel også akseptere at det var en «atypisk form på vidvanke», selv om dette ikke klinger særlig godt i entomologens ører.
Men så, – endelig fant jeg Stratiomys singularior i sitt rette element i sumpområder i kystlandskapet på Hvaler i 2019, og alle varsellamper begynte å blinke rødt. Lavlandsformen var virkelig svært forskjellig fra fjellformen. Store forskjeller i utseende mellom de to formene ble også bekreftet av store genetiske forskjeller etter DNA-analyse. Det var ingen tvil om at dette var to ulike arter.
Omfattende søk i litteraturen førte meg så til en russisk artikkel der en østsibirsk Stratiomys-art omtales som den eneste arten i denne gruppen med et nordlig utbredelsesmønster. Det var ikke mulig å finne bilder av denne mystiske arten, men etter hvert fant jeg fram til en bestemmelsesnøkkel der denne arten var inkludert. Og det var ingen tvil, alle karakterer stemte med Stratiomys validicornis som var beskrevet fra Mongolia og nordøstlige deler av Kina i 1851.
Gåten var dermed løst og Stratiomys validicornis er nå en nyregistrert art for Europa, som først ble funnet av Siebke i 1861, og så skulle det gå nesten 150 år før den ble gjenfunnet i det lille sandtaket ved Hjerkinn. Men dessverre for Siebke var han 9 år for seint ute med sin beskrivelse, slik at Stratiomys paludosa kun blir et nytt synonym for Stratiomys validicornis. Jeg har nå selvfølgelig også lest Siebkes beskrivelse av paludosa og ser at vi utvilsomt har funnet samme art, og pussig nok ligger hans funnsted knapt 10 km unna mitt. Mye tyder derfor på at den store og vakre flua har surret i sitt lille paradis på Dovrefjell i mer enn 150 år uten verken å bli oppdaget av mennesker eller, for den saks skyld, «uten å gjøre en flue fortred».
